A cinnabar lacquer snuff bottle
Palace workshops, 1780-1820
Cinnabar lacquer on copper, of inverted double gourd form, the neck with
a leiwen band, each face carved with flowers and rocks, the metal exposed
on the lip and foot rim, the concave foot in black lacquer, with an original
stopper, also cinnabar lacquer on copper, with a gilt metal finial.
2 1/4in (5.8cm) high
$4,000 - 6,000
An identically-shaped cinnabar lacquer bottle, with different floral motifs
is in the Humphrey Hui collection and illustrated in Heavenly Creations,
no. 279 p. 164. It is possible that both bottles were originally a part of
a set, with different bottles showcasing seasonally appropriate flowers.
The unusual inverted double gourd form of the present bottle along the
second example make it likely they were produced together.
