A duan stone table screen
19th century
Carved in relief, the colors of the stone highlighting a deftly crafted scene
of a landscape with two red-crowned cranes beneath a pine with a rocky
outcropping and lingzhi fungus, with stylized clouds against a purple
ground, the stone fitted neatly into a wood stand.

A carved zitan brush pot
Of cylindrical section beneath a flat mouth rim, carved to one side to
depict the Budai monk bearing a characteristically jovial expression
and shouldering his eponymous cloth sack next to the incised
inscription excerpted from the five-character poem ‘Above the
Ramparts (Sai Shang Qu)’ by the Tang dynasty poet Wang Changling
beside the incised seal reading Wang Changling Yin, the well-figured
densely grained wood of chocolate hue supported by small inset
raised feet.

The excerpt of the poem by the Tang dynasty poet Wang Changlin reads:
Chan ming kong sang lin
Ba yue Xiao guan dao
Chu sai fu ru sai
chu chu huang lu cao
which can be translated to mean:
The cicada calls through the empty mulberry forest
along the Xiao pass in autumn
ever out the frontier and back in again
with yellowed grasses in all directions.
