Duan Fang was a high Manchurian official in
the waning years of the Qing dynasty and also
a major collector of early bronzes and jades. His
collection, Taozhai, was self-published in 1908.
Duan Fang traveled to Egypt in the summer of
1906, presumably when he made this rubbing.
After his death in 1911, the majority of his
Chinese bronzes and jades were dispersed and
sold to American and European Museums;
however, his collection of Egyptian artifacts was
recently re-discovered in the archives of the
Peking University Museum in Beijing.
The accompanying box bears an inscription
that states the scroll was obtained in Beijing in
1938 by the Korean artist and calligrapher Li
Han-bok (1897-1943).
