Formerly in a Connecticut private collection
                                                                              Although bearing signature and seals of the Southern Song dynasty court
                                                                              artist Liu Songnian, the composition is based on a work by Ma Xingzu
                                                                              (active ca. 1131-1162), the son of Ma Fen (12th c.) who painted for the
                                                                              court a generation prior to Liu Songnian’s arrival. The original Ma Xingzu
                                                                              scroll is in the collection of the Freer Sackler Museum (F1982.35), and
                                                                              depicts a gathering of nine elders at the Luoyang garden estate of the
                                                                              Tang poet Bo Juyi (772-846) in the year 845. It has been assumed that the
                                                                              colorful character wearing flowers in his hat is the poet. A third handscroll
                                                                              with a nearly identical composition is in the collection of the National
                                                                              Palace Museum, Taipei, also bears a signature of Liu Songnian, but is
                                                                              dated to the Ming dynasty.
