Provenance: 無名氏 九老圖 設色絹本 手卷
Formerly in a Connecticut private collection
Although bearing signature and seals of the Southern Song dynasty court
artist Liu Songnian, the composition is based on a work by Ma Xingzu
(active ca. 1131-1162), the son of Ma Fen (12th c.) who painted for the
court a generation prior to Liu Songnian’s arrival. The original Ma Xingzu
scroll is in the collection of the Freer Sackler Museum (F1982.35), and
depicts a gathering of nine elders at the Luoyang garden estate of the
Tang poet Bo Juyi (772-846) in the year 845. It has been assumed that the
colorful character wearing flowers in his hat is the poet. A third handscroll
with a nearly identical composition is in the collection of the National
Palace Museum, Taipei, also bears a signature of Liu Songnian, but is
dated to the Ming dynasty.
