A LARGE CARVED POLYCHROME LACQUER
‘BAJIXIANG’ BOX AND COVER
QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD
modelled with eight rounded sides raised on a short
spreading foot, the cover crispy carved through deep
layers of lacquer with a stylised chrysanthemum bloom
framed by ruyi pendants to the centre, encircled by
bajixiang (‘Eight Buddhist Emblems’) evenly scattered
amidst various leafy floral sprays, reserved against
a green and yellow diaper ground, encircled by ruyi
pendant and keyfret borders, decorated to each side
with a panel of basketry amongst lotuses borne on
meandering leaves, the box similarly decorated, the
interiors and base lacquered black

Width 44 cm, 17¼ in.
Compare this box with a similarly rendered box, but with
gilt design in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in
Lacquerware in the Collection of the Palace Museum.
