A CARVED POLYCHROME LACQUER BOX AND
COVER
QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD
of peach form, the domed cover crisply carved through
layers of red, green and yellow lacquer with a central
panel depicting Lu Dongbin and his acolyte amongst a
large overhanging tree, jagged rocks and vegetation, the
sides carved with bats and cranes amidst ruyi-shaped
clouds, the box similarly decorated with a further band of
cresting waves, the interiors and base lacquered black

Width 16.5 cm, 6½ in.
Compare a similarly shaped cinnabar lacquer box
decorated with an immortal, in the National Palace
Museum, Taipei, included in the Museum’s exhibition
Masterpieces of Chinese Carved Lacquerware in the
National Palace Museum, 1971, cat. no. 45.

of hexagonal form, the cover carved with a scholar and
his attendant travelling towards a pavilion amidst lush
vegetation and jagged rocks, all reserved against a
diaper ground and undulating lines, the sides carved with
alternating scenes of scholars and various floral blooms,
the interiors and base lacquered black
