The foliate crown of the present figure is centered by an amphora, which identifies the figure as
Bodhisattva Mahasthamaprapta. The face, especially with the soft brows and the rounded cheeks
and chin, resembles several figures dated to the Chenghua period, including lot 2825 in the
current sale, a bronze figure of Manjushri dated the first year of the Chenghua reign (1465), and a
lacquered-wood figure of Avalokitesvara dated 10th year of the Chenghua reign (1475) offered at
Christie’s Hong Kong, 30 November, 2020, lot 3014.
