                                                                                                            Depicting a drunken dancing Shojo holding a sake ladle, her red
                                                                                                            face inlaid in coral, the facial features finely carved. Her robe is
                                                                                                            lacquered in gold and decorated with various patterns in hiramaki-e
                                                                                                            and takamaki-e. Her hair is lacquered in bright red. Himotoshi
                                                                                                            through the reverse.

                                                                                                            himotoshi.

                                                                                                                                                                                               An unusual and rare netsuke depicting a standing oni, dressed in
                                                               Unsigned                                                                                                                        a gold-lacquered tiger skin loincloth and holding a small green-
                                                               Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)                                                                                     lacquered oni before him. The expressions of the pair is enigmatic
                                                                                                                                                                                               and very peculiar. The skin of the larger oni is of a matte silver
                                                                                                                                                                                               lacquer and shades of red lacquer shimmer through the hair, which
                                                               A lightly stained square-shaped ivory hako (box) netsuke lacquered                                                              is topped off by golden horns. The underside of one foot shows
                                                               in gold takamaki-e with an image of three red-crested cranes                                                                    the signature KAJIKAWA 梶川 in gold takamaki-e. The himotoshi is
                                                               each one holding one of the ‘three friends of winter’, the bamboo,                                                              cleverly placed in the form of a single hole through the mid-section,
                                                               pine and plum, in their beaks. Fine spots of honey patina. Central                                                              hidden by the oni’s elbow in the front.
