My utmost thanks to Dr. Claudia Brown, my dissertation committee chair and
advisor at Arizona State University, for her guidance with this dissertation. Dr. Brown
has provided me with invaluable insight, support and knowledge that has become the
foundation for my work. I am eternally grateful to Dr. Janet Baker, Curator of Asian Art
at the Phoenix Art Museum, for her expertise in evaluating my writing and providing
valuable advice. She has been an influential mentor and confidant in both my academic
and professional careers. I am also indebted to Dr. Betsy Fahlman, who has provided me
