20th century
The convex stem section carved in low relief with a trio of
scholar sages conversing and playing Chinese chess in a
secluded mountain ravine, a gnarled pine tree overhanging
the scene, box. 27.5cm (10 3/4in) high (2).

TWO CARVED BAMBOO BRUSH POTS
18th/19th century
The first carved in low relief with two scholar sages and
an attendant conversing underneath trees and rockwork,
the reverse with an inscription, with a later mounted metal
inner sleeve; the second smaller brush pot carved with a
narrative scene. The largest: 14cm (5 1/2in) high (2).

The smaller brush pot is carved with the scene of Xie An,
the Eastern Jin general and strategist, winning a game of
chess just at the moment a horse man gallops towards
them with news of an unlikely victory by An’s greatly
outnumbered army.
