Werner Muensterberge (1913-2011) was
born in Dortmund and was exposed to
Chinese, African and European Modern
Art at an early age through a long standing
acquaintance with Baron Eduard von der
Heydt. Fleeing Nazi Germany in the late
1930s he continued his Art History studies in
Switzerland before moving to Amsterdam and
becoming a curator at the Stedelijk Museum.
From 1947 he taught ethno-psychoanalysis
at Columbia University, finally becoming
a professor at New York State University.
Muensterberge wrote several influential books
including Forgers on the Couch in which he
psychoanalyzed historical and contemporary
forgers including Han Van Meegeren.
