born in Dortmund and was exposed to
              Chinese, African and European Modern
Art at an early age through a long standing
acquaintance with Baron Eduard von der
Heydt. Fleeing Nazi Germany in the late
1930s he continued his Art History studies in
Switzerland before moving to Amsterdam and
becoming a curator at the Stedelijk Museum.
              From 1947 he taught ethno-psychoanalysis
              at Columbia University, finally becoming

              Muensterberge wrote several influential books
including Forgers on the Couch in which he
              psychoanalyzed historical and contemporary
              forgers including Han Van Meegeren.
