Property from the
S. Lup Jung Collection,
Wilmington, Delaware
lots 360-485
Shee Lup Jung -scientist, art collector, dealer, lecturer, master gardener, chef,
hobbyist- was born in Los Angeles to Chinese parents and raised in the
Mojave area of California. A prodigious scholar since childhood, Jung’s
academic pursuits took him to The University of California at Berkeley where
he studied chemical engineering in the classroom and frequented museums
and galleries on weekends and during breaks. Jung received his PhD from
the University of Pennsylvania and moved with his wife Mary to
Wilmington, Delaware in 1951 where he was employed as a research
chemist for DuPont. Inspired by Mary’s equal passion for the arts, Mr. Jung
slowly and methodically studied and acquired works of fine and decorative
art for the family’s personal collection. Along with children Maria and
Spencer, Mary and S. Lup Jung began to take frequent trips to New York
where the family bought attended art exhibitions and auctions. By 1975, the
Jungs had incorporated and started Jungs, Inc., an art and antique
dealership eventually based in a historic home in central Wilmington. After
25 years of operation, Jungs, Inc. closed in 2005. The family’s personal
collection and remaining inventory was housed in their spacious Wilmington
apartment and infrequently seen thereafter.
Shee Lup Jung passed away in 2015. He is well remembered in Wilmington
as a generous philanthropist, gifted educator and knowledgeable art dealer
of great integrity. The following lots exemplify the variety of Chinese artwork
Jungs, Inc. handled. Evidence of Mr. Jung’s extensive research can be found
on the many tags, labels and notes originally accompanying these works of
art. It is with great pleasure that Freeman’s presents property from the
Collection of S. Lup Jung: an important regional scholar and dealer in
Chinese works of art.
