Lapis lazuli was a prized material mostly imported from Afghanistan, Examples of lapis lazuli figures of Buddha are illustrated in Buddhist
and was used principally for carving vessels, figures in relatively small Art from Rehol, Tibetan Buddhist Images and Ritual Objects from
sizes and ‘boulder’ or grotto carvings, often carved with solitary the Qing Dynasty Summer Palace at Chengde, Taipei, 1999, no.81;
luohans. These rare Buddha figures were likely made for invocatory and by M.Knight, He Li and T.Tse Bartholomew, Chinese Jades, San
purposes, probably for smaller Imperial altars during the late 18th Francisco, 2007, no.327, dated to the 18th century. Another lapis lazuli
century and onwards. figure of Buddha, 18th century, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art,
New York, acc.no.30.95.324.
