LIAO DYNASTY (AD 907-1125)

The slender fgure is shown standing on two lotus socles on top of
a waisted square plinth. His hands are held in samadhimudra and he
wears layered robes that fall in crisp folds to his bare feet. The face is
held in a meditative expression, and the hair is dressed in curls around
a small ushnisha. There is a tiny button for attachment of an aureole
on the back.

waisted plinth. Compare with another example at the Musée Guimet,
illustrated in Comprehensive Illustrated Catalogue of Chinese Buddhist
Statues in Overseas Collections, vol. 7, Beijing, 2005, p. 1291, and another
example sold at Christie’s New York, 18-19 September 2014, lot 1022.
