A RARE JAPANESE CARVED CORAL TRIPOD CENSER AND COVER
19TH CENTURY
The censer is fnely carved around the sides with four archaistic dragons writhing amidst
scrolling clouds, beneath a key-fret border which encircles the mouth rim. The three legs
are carved with leaf tips and each is encircled by a bat with outstretched wings. The cover is
well-carved with a ferocious three-clawed dragon clutching a faming pearl. The underside is
carved with the inscription Kando saku (made by Kando).

PROVENANCE:
The K’ung Hsiang-Hsi (Kong Xiangxi, 1881- 1967) Collection, New York, and thence by
descent within the family.
