A SMALL AMETHYST SEAL
LATE QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
The cylindrical seal is surmounted by a carved and undercut seated qilin with
its tail tucked next to its hind legs. The details of the mane and hair are fnely
incised. The seal face is carved with two seal characters reading ‘shui qing’.
The stone is of an even, translucent, purple tone.

The seal inscription shui qing is recorded as one of the seals used by the
Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908). An imprint of this seal is recorded in
