A SOAPSTONE FIGURE OF A LUOHAN
18TH CENTURY
The fgure is crisply carved wearing a headband on a high forehead above
a smiling face between pendulous earlobes. He wears long robes that are
decorated with incised clouds and fowers and painted in various pigments. He
is carved with his hands clasped before him and held up in prayer and is seated
on a gnarled rock with one leg raised and the other resting on the foor. The
stone is of a creamy tone with fne veins.
