A BRONZE FIGURE OF LÜ DONGBIN
LATE MING DYNASTY

finely cast as Lü Dongbin standing elegantly with meditative face turned towards the right,
adorned with a headdress and dressed in long flowing robes, the right arm bent at an angle
revealing the right hand, the figure with a dark brownish-black patina, wood stand
18.7 cm., 7 3/8 in.

CATALOGUE NOTE

This type of sculpture is traditionally dated to the late Ming Period. However, in Hausmann’s opinion it is possible that
this and other closely related examples date from an earlier period, as suggested by early representations of Lü
Dongbin in late 15th century blue and white porcelain of the ‘wind-swept’ style.
