    A RARE IMPERIAL BRONZE ‘DRAGON’ RITUAL

    BELL, BIANZHONG

    QIANLONG INCISED MARK, CORRESPONDING TO 1744 AND OF THE
    PERIOD

    Of barrel form, the bell is heavily cast and decorated in high
    relief with a band of two dragons grasping the flaming pearl
    alternating with two vertical panels, one enclosing the reign date
    Qianlong jiu nian zhi, ‘made in the ninth year of Qianlong’, and
    the other, the bell’s tone bei zhong lü, all above a band of large flat
    discs alternating with stylised clouds and below a further band of
    clouds. The flat top is surmounted by a suspension handle in the
    form of a two-headed dragon.
