A VERY RARE PAIR OF DOUCAI ‘FLORAL PROVENANCE

12 December 1989, lot 467, and later again at Christie’s Hong Kong,
Each bowl is finely decorated around the exterior in delicate 23 March 1993, lot 810. This unusual pattern is modelled after Ming
prototypes, such as a Wanli-marked bowl of the same form and motif,
enamels and underglaze blue with a continuous foliate scroll with from the Roger Pilkington Collection, sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 6
April 2016, lot 48; and another one from the collections of H.M. Knight
six leaf-like trefoil blooms with long stamens, between a border of and T.Y. Chao, most recently sold at Sotheby’s London, 13 November
2002, lot 113. The Wanli bowls in turn were likely to be inspired by
overlapping petals bearing stamens around the rim and a band of Chenghua doucai wares, characterised by the subdued palette which
is closer in style to the porcelain from the Chenghua period rather than
ruyi heads around the foot. The interior is further decorated with a the more colourful wares commonly seen from the Wanli reign.
