     A GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF STANDING

     GUANYIN

     MING DYNASTY, 16TH-17TH CENTURY

     The figure of Guanyin is shown standing on a double-lotus base
     raised on a hexagonal plinth, with the hand raised in vitarka mudra,
     the left hand holding a vase, wearing a jewelled necklace, a dhoti
     tied at waist, a celestial scarf over the arms, and a cloth draped over
     the high top knot centred in the front by a figure of Amitabha
     Buddha.

     This beautifully cast figure reflects the influence of late Tang style,
     such as that embodied by a figure of standing Bodhisattva from
     the Eugene Fuller Memorial Collection in the Seattle Art Museum,
     included by Henry Trubner in The Arts of the Tang Dynasty, 1959, pp.
     58-9, no. 101; another Tang example is included in The Crucibles of
     Compassion and Wisdom, Special Exhibition Catalogue of The Buddhist
     Bronzes from the Nitta Grouop Collection at the National Palace
     Museum, Taipei, 1987, p. 183, pl. 87.
