A MAGNIFICENT AND MASSIVE IMPERIAL
STAINED IVORY-EMBELLISHED ZITAN SCREEN
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The rectangular ivory panel is exquisitely carved in relief of
varying depths and stained in various shades of multiple colours
to depict nine scholars on horseback and their attendants entering
a bustling scene through the Gate of Yuxian and passing through
the Cave of Chaoyang along a winding path across a lake
with residences, wutong and pine trees, and mountains on the
embankment. The ivory panel is inset within a zitan frame carved
with floral scrolls on keyfret. The frame is supported on a large
zitan stand elaborately carved with lotus scrolls on keyfret on the
aprons and spandrels.
