A ‘HUANGHUALI’ TEAPOT CONTAINER
LATE MING DYNASTY

明末 黃花梨茶壺桶

of trapezoidal form, constructed with flaring straight sides with exposed dove-tailed joints to the edges rising from four bracket feet, the front
carved with a central ruyi-shaped cartouche enclosing a low-relief coiling dragon typically found on the splats of extant Ming horseshoe
armchairs, below an angular groove reinforced with shaped metal mounts at the rim for the teapot spout, all above a cusped lower edge
between the feet, the sides of the container further decorated with metal floral roundels and a pair of wing-like fittings to house the lobed
removable handle securing the flat cover, the fittings and handle decorated with cloud-shaped motifs
22.3 by 21.8 by 18.5 cm, 8¾ by 8½ by 7¼ in.

There are many surviving examples of teapot holders, mainly        茶壺桶傳世品眾多,多為晚清、民國舊物。常以柴木製,亦有髹漆。此品
from the late Qing and Republic period. Almost all are made        屬晚明,又以珍貴黃花梨木造,十分珍罕。
of miscellaneous soft woods, some lacquered. Those made in
precious huanghuali and dated to the Ming are very rare.           茶壺桶正面雕刻如意形開光,內飾生動盤龍,此紋飾常見於傳世明朝圈椅
                                                                   靠背板。

                                                                   桶身壺嘴開口鑲有銅護件加固。提把和兩側把手下端皆飾雲紋。
