A RELIEF-CARVED SHADOW AGATE BOTTLE
1830-1900
Of rounded shape and carved in medium relief with a scholar on a
rocky hillock pointing to a cloud shrouded sun, incised ri, his youthful
assistant nearby beneath a willow tree and carrying items attached
to a rod over his shoulders, the scene continuing to the other side
with a large grasshopper on a cabbage near flowering aster below
two butterflies and a single dragonfly near a large rock on one of the
narrow sides, all below a wide cylindrical neck and supported on a
rounded oval foot ring, the darker inclusions within the matrix of the
stone cleverly used to highlight various features.
