           A GREY AND BEIGE JADE 'ELEPHANT AND
           BOYS' GROUP
           18th century
           Carved as a wrinkled elephant with its head turned
           to the right and standing atop a boulder above a
           whirling pool of water with delicately incised waves,
           accompanied by three boys clambering on its back,
           and a figure holding a box at the front, the stone a
           mottled grey hue with black inclusions.

           The depiction of boys tending to an elephant carries
           profound symbolism and auspiciousness. The
           phrase 'ride an elephant' (qi xiang 騎象) sounds
           similar to 'good fortune' (ji xiang 吉祥), adding
           layers of meaning. Additionally, the boy cleaning the   246
           elephant with a broom, sao xiang (掃象), creates a
           pun as 'elephant' (xiang 象) shares pronunciation
           with 'image'. This symbolizes the Buddhist concept
           of sweeping away worldly illusions.
           A similar scene of washing the elephant can be
           found on a jade group in the Palace Museum,
           Beijing, see Zhang Guangwen, ed., Gugong
           bowuyuan cang wenwu zhenpin quanji: yuqi,
           xia[Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace
           Museum: Jade, III], Beijing, 1996, p. 118, cat. no.
           98.

           A MOTTLED JADE 'EAR' CUP
           17th century
           Of ovoid section, the curved walls supported on a
           short oval foot, the exterior body decorated with a
           band of stylized scrolls below the rim bearing incised
           key-fret patterns, one side flanked by a loop handle
           topped with a taotie mask, the stone a mottled
           green hue with dark brown veins and inclusions.
