As noted by J.Rawson in Chinese Jades from the Neolithic
to the Qing, London, London, 1995, pp.366-367, ceramic
figures of hounds were made from the Han period and coiled
exampels are known from as early as the fourth or fifth century
AD. Jade hounds with crossed fore paws and defined spine and
ribs are typically dated to the Song Dynasty, see ibid., no.26:10;
see also Chinese Jade Animals, Hong Kong, 1996, pls.98-99
and 107. The carving of the present white jade hound would
suggest a later date, within the Ming Dynasty period; for
a Ming Dynasty jade carving of a hound, see Chinese Jade
Animals, Hong Kong, 1996, pl.156.
