Two carved green jade ‘chilong’ snuff bottles

234 | Bonhams One bottle of compressed heart shape carved in
varying levels of relief with a chilong on each side
encircled by scrolling clouds, 4.8cm (2in) high;
the other bottle of slender baluster form, carved
in high relief to depict a chilong in pursuit of a
flaming pearl surrounded by a vapour of ruyi-
shaped clouds, glass stopper, 6.3cm (2½in) high.

A pale green jade ‘cicada’ snuff bottle
19th century
The even-toned jade boldly carved in the shape
of a resting cicada in various relief with details
including the eyes, the thorax and the abdomen,
tiger’s eye stopper.

Snuff bottles were depicted in the form of fruit,
vegetables and animals including insects in the
Imperial production in the mid-Qing period. Please
see lot 192 for the symbolism of the cicada.
