An inscribed white jade snuff bottle and a
mottled grey jade ‘rocks and bamboo’ snuff
bottle
19th century
The white jade snuff bottle of flattened ovoid
form standing on an oval flat base, carved on
one side with a five-character inscription within a
circular panel, zai jia chang ru yi and the reverse
with another inscription chu wai yong ping an, the
softly-polished stone of even tone, coral stopper,
4.9cm (2in) high; the other rounded rectangular
bottle carved on one side with stalks of bamboo
amidst rockwork cleverly making use of the black
inclusion to show the outline of the design, the
reverse with similar decoration, carnelian stopper,
5.9cm (2 1/3in) high. (4).

The inscription on the white jade snuff bottle
reads:

在家長如意,
出外永平安。

Which may be translated as:

‘At home may you long be gratified,                  207
Away from home may you forever be safe.’

A spinach-green jade ‘basket-weave’ snuff
bottle
Late 18th/early 19th century
Of ovoid form resting on a slightly concave
oval foot, carved overall to simulate woven
basket-work above and below two narrow ruyi
borders, the stone of spinach-green tone with
minor light celadon inclusion, jadeite stopper.

The basket-weave design was popular at the
court in the mid-Qing Dynasty where a similar
design can be found depicted in different
materials, for instance glass, amber and ivory.
