              Brightly painted around the exterior with four fish swimming between four
              clumps of lotus with quatre-foliate sprays of waterweed, all above a band
              of ruyi-head above the foot, the interior with a single fish amid lotus and
              waterweed above foaming waves.

              A small blue and white rectangular tray
              Wanli six-character mark and of the period
              Raised on a low tapering foot, the delicate tray brightly painted on the
              interior with a group of two orchids in the well and peony, chrysanthemum
              and daisy on the sides, the exterior with fruiting sprays of two peaches on
              the longer sides and a single peach on the shorter sides, Japanese silk bag
              and wooden box.
              6.5cm (2½in) long (2).

              Production during the Wanli period included many porcelain objects for the
              scholar’s desk, including pen boxes, seal paste boxes and small trays such
              as the present lot. Compare a related circular box and cover, also with a
              Wanli six-character mark, illustrated by J.Harrison-Hall, Ming Ceramics in
              the British Museum, London, 2001, no.11:128.
