of a Kannon biraki tansu for export to Europe
in the 18th century: the pair of doors fronting
five interior storage drawers and elaborate
chased metal hardware, the surfaces
‘Japanned’ in black and shades of gilt paint
with Asian style building in abbreviated
landscapes, the drawer interiors also painted
in cinnabar colored paint; supported on
a conforming painted wood stand (wear,
chips).

A LACQUERED WOOD TWO-PANEL
FLOOR SCREEN
Meiji era, late 19th century
Carved in high relief with six Buddhist rakan
(sk. arhat) and one young attendant standing
and seated under a tree that extends across
the upper portions of both rectangular panels
set within elaborately carved and undercut
frames incorporating a long-tailed phoenix
at the top, dragons crawling up the exterior
sides and repeated in the rectangular apron
at the base above the four wheel supports,
the reverse finished with pairs of phoenix and
paulownia blossoms in flat relief (minor chips,
shrinkage).
