AN ARITA BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN SQUARE DISH
Edo period
The interior well painted in shades of underglaze blue with a sinuous
dragon amid cloud scrolls framed by geometric and key-fret bands at
the cavetto, the wide flaring rim with further key-fret patterning at the
corners alternating with smaller stylized bird reserves on a painted
nanako ground, the exterior with peony blossoms issuing from leafy
tendrils above three cobalt blue string bands encircling the tall foot
rim, the base with another string band framing a debased ‘Qianlong’
mark (minute rim chips).
