周璕 山水 設色絹本 立軸

In the inscription the artist notes he executed the painting in the style
of “little General Li”, or Li Zhaodao (675-758) of the Tang dynasty, in
reference to the blue and green mineral pigments used to color the
mountains. For centuries artists would rely on the blue/green palette to
not only evoke the aesthetics of the past, but also to convey a longing for
the golden age of the Tang period. Zhou Xun’s nostalgia for the past went
deeper than his artistic output, as in 1729 he was arrested for attempting
to overthrow the Qing to restore the Ming dynasty.
