18th century Tables of this type, composed of a long single board mortise
The massive, well-figured single board top half-lapped, mortise and tenoned to the sideboards, were used for holding musical
and tenoned to thick side panels carved with a single yuji cut-out instruments, reading handscrolls and other leisurely pursuits. The

San Francisco Craft & Folk Museum, 1992, p. 21, no. 4, where a
seventeenth century huanghuali table with everted flange ends is
illustrated with a similar treatment of the side panels which are carved
with an open design of a lingzhi or ruyi motif. A woodblock print from
The Golden Lotus, 1695 edition is also illustrated and shows such a
table in an intimate pavilion setting.
