This compelling image of the Huangpu River and Shanghai Bund
was taken in the final year of the Qing Dynasty. Using photography,
a Western media introduced to China just a half century before, the
unnamed photographer adapts the long, thin format of a traditional
Chinese horizontal handscroll landscape painting, synthesizing the
two traditions.
