Two similar bottles, of compressed form with
waisted necks, flat lips and unglazed oval foot
rims, molded ring mask handles, painted with
landscapes, titled in ink on each side Huazhou
Chunxiao (Spring dawn of Blossom Island)
reversed by Donghu Ye Yue (Evening moon
on the East Lake), the foot with apocryphal
Qianlong mark and Yongzheng mark in iron
red.
2 5/8in (6.7cm) high, the larger

These bottles are part of a larger group of
porcelains produced during the Jiaqing and
Daoguang periods that are decorated with
fencai enamels featuring the famous sites of
Nanchang and Jiangxi Province.

Imperial, Jingdezhen kilns, Daoguang mark
and of the period
Of compressed form, with an unglazed oval
foot rim, each side enameled with an insect,
one standing atop a small basket and the
other inside its cage, with the four-character
mark in iron red to the foot.

The motif of katydid and cage combination
is a rebus for the Chinese phrase of jinzhong
baoguo, meaning ‘to be loyal to one’s
country’. Snuff bottles with this theme can be
found with a variety of design combinations.
