A very large and rare blue and white altar vase
Wanli six-character mark and of the period
Well potted in archaistic fanggu form, the central section applied with
four Buddhist lion handles at the compass points, each side further
decorated with ascending and descending five-clawed dragons and
phoenixes in flight, amidst dense ground of leafy floral stems and
pointed rockwork protruding from breaking waves, the rim exhibiting
a thin frieze of scrolling tendrils enclosing a six-character kaishu mark
within a rectangle.
