The present lot belongs to a well-known group of wares made with
incised decoration, highlighted with green enamel, on a rich yellow-
glazed ground. Dragons are ubiquitous in Chinese art and represent
power and authority further symbolise the emperor. Those found on
the exterior of the current dish, with typically long sinuous flowing
bodies and prominent heads detailed with fierce expressions, are very
similar to those on a Kangxi mark and period yellow-ground green-
enamelled bowl illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures
of the Palace Museum: Miscellaneous Enamelled Porcelains Plain
Tricoloured Porcelains, Shanghai, 2009, p.107, no.88. The present
dish is further notable and rare for its size.

A Kangxi mark and period dish of very similar decoration and size was
sold at Sotheby’s London, 16 May 2012, lot 282.
