side, magnificently carved through a thick layer of red lacquer in 山形縣蟹仙洞博物館藏
high relief, featuring two phoenixes encircling in flight amidst a dense
stylised lotus scrolls, the mythical creatures depicted within barbed The inscription on the Japanese wood box and cover literally translates
haitang borders above a finely worked trefoil ground, accompanied as:
with further four phoenixes at the four corners, the apron spanning the
cabriole legs decorated with smaller phoenixes frolicking amidst dense ‘Chinese Lacquer Table, No.127 (later amended to No.7)’
flowering foliage, all separated by a band of leaf lappets and zig-
