PROVENANCE: In this drawing, the twenty-one year old Gervais portrayed his friend, the
Louis-Marie-Joseph Morel d’Arleaux (1755-1827), Abbeville. sculptor Jean Rivière (1853-1924), who was also active in Toulouse.
with Mark Brady & Co., New York.
In 1834, Bridoux won the Prix de Rome for engraving at the Paris Académie
and soon after moved to Italy where he lived for five years. This affectionate
portrait of two young men was most likely executed shortly before the artist’s
departure or perhaps on that occasion. A handwritten inscription in graphite
at the bottom of the sheet, now only partially legible, once recorded the name
of the sitter with his friend.
