After a design by French sculptor Claude Ballin, the large garden vase in the
shape of an urn was executed in bronze for the gardens of Versailles in 1665.
Artist Jean Le Pautre reproduced Ballin's designs in etchings in the following
decade, which popularized Ballin's garden vases throughout Europe and in
various iterations.
