A VERY RARE BLUE AND WHITE ‘EROTIC’
VASE
LATE MING-EARLY QING DYNASTY, MID-17TH CENTURY
The cylindrical body is finely painted in various shades of cobalt
blue depicting two couples engaging in amorous pursuits in a
garden setting comprising bamboo, pierced rocks, plantain and
prunus trees. The shoulder is incised with a band of floral scroll
underneath underglaze-blue leaves around the mouth. The foot is
incised with a band of geometric pattern. The vase is covered with
a clear glaze inside and out, falling short above the foot, revealing
the fine, white body.
