A FINE GILT-BRONZE ‘BUDDHIST LION’ SCROLL WEIGHT
Ming Dynasty
The mythical beast finely cast in a recumbent position with paws
tucked in, its head raised and turned to the left, its jaw open with
ferocious expression revealing its tongue and sharp teeth, the furry
mane flowing along the neck, the knobbly spine terminating in a bushy
tail.

明 銅鎏金太獅紙鎮

The present gilt bronze Buddhist lion is powerfully rendered, with
sharp outstretched claws, the jaws open, the rib-cage well delineated
and with a pronounced spine. This rendition is arguably more in line
with an early Ming dynasty dating, although a mid-Ming dynasty date
cannot be excluded.
