18th century The Shoulao figure, 18th century; the monkey, 18th/19th century
Modelled as two seated felines, turned to face each other, catching The Shoulao and deer carved from a translucent white stone with
butterflies in their mouths, the details heightened by the russet cloudy inclusions, the details finely picked out in shallow relief, wood
inclusions in the stone. 7cm (2.3/4in) long. stand; and a stylised pale green and mushroom jade carving of a
monkey holding a fruiting peach branch, stand. The Shoulao figure

Scott L. Burdett was a diplomat in the British Consular Service in 147
China. He served in Harbin in the 1920’s, was promoted to British
Consul in the 1930’s, and Consul General in Shanghai in the 1950’s. A PALE GREEN AND RUSSET JADE GROTTO GROUP
He also translated the Chinese Criminal Code into English. Qing Dynasty
Depicting a boy and a bearded sage in a mountainous grotto,
amongst pine and lingzhi.
