the slender columnar brush handle relief-carved
with an old scholar and a boy playing a sheng
in a rockery below a willow and scrolled clouds,
the tapered end depicting a bird among fruiting
branches and rockwork, the cover carved
with two Þ gures gathering lingzhi, each scene
between decorative patterned bands (2)

Þ tting into the conforming cover, the cover
coated in numerous layers of red lacquer and
carved to the top with a central lotus blossom,
its petals terminating in ruyi heads, encircled
by a band of ß oral scroll and further blossoms
and ribbons all over a wave-pattern ground,
the sides carved with bats soaring amidst
blossoming and fruiting peach boughs against
a ß oral diaper ground, the interiors and base
lacquered black (2)
