A SMALL CARVED TIXI RED LACQUER
BOX AND COVER
MING DYNASTY, 15TH-16TH CENTURY
The metal-bodied box and cover are deeply carved with
‘pommel scrolls’, those on the cover encircling a central
cross-shaped motif.

Private collection, Tokyo, formed in the 1930-40s.
A similar carved red tixi lacquer box and cover, dated
to the Ming dynasty, 15th-16th century, in the National
Palace Museum, Taipei, is illustrated in Carving the Subtle
Radiance of Colors: Treasured Lacquerware in the National
Palace Museum, Taipei, 2008, p. 60, no. 37.
