depicting pheasants on branches of tree peony issuing from rockwork
between formal bands of decoration.

The single example decorated with figural scenes in famille rose
enamels upon recessed panels, reserved on a textured turquoise
ground further relief decorated with scrolls and leaves, 27cm high;
the pair similarly decorated with raised shaped panels (professional
restoration to necks).

The figure wears a colourful gilt-decorated robe with flowing scarf, her
hair scraped back into a high chignon below a hat, holding a blue and
white baluster vase and standing on a square sectional plinth (minor
restorations).

The present lot still retains its detachable weighted porcelain head
which allows the lady to elegantly nod when touched. David S.
Howard notes in Choice of the Private Trader (Zwemmer 1994) that
these types of figures were probably copied from a German chinoiserie
model and display the European ideal of a Chinese lady.
