                                                                      AN INSCRIBED CELADON JADE
                                                                      ‘BODHIDHARMA’ MEDALLION
                                                                      QING DYNASTY, 18TH - 19TH CENTURY

                                                                      of circular form, carved in high relief on the front with the
                                                                      Patriarch Bodhidharma riding on a stalk of millet, incised
                                                                      around the rim with a gilt twenty character poem, miao ji zhen
                                                                      li xing, qing yuan li kong wang, zhao yi shen zhi jing, ming yuan
                                                                      shi zhong chang, the reverse with a further fifty-six character
                                                                      inscription, the stone of a translucent yellowish green colour
                                                                      9.7 cm, 3¾ in.
                                                                      the inscription on the reverse of this votive plaque explains that
                                                                      the twenty characters in the front of the plaque can be read as a
                                                                      poem from any starting point, forming up to forty poems in all.

           the largest well carved in low relief with foreign merchant
           bivouacking on the silk road by moonlight, with a camel and
           a walled gate in the distance, inscribed with a four characters
           poem pertaining to the scene, the smaller brushpot carved in
           the form of a section of bamboo with to insects hovering by
           13 and 8.6 cm, 5⅛ and 3⅜ in.
