A FINELY CARVED BOXWOOD 清十八世紀 黃楊木雕劉海戲蟾

QING DYNASTY, 18TH
CENTURY
depicted seated on a rootwood stool with his three-legged
toad perched on the right knee, his left arm raised holding
an inscribed cash coin, carrying on his back a wide-brimmed
straw hat tied on a twisted rope across one shoulder, the
figure clad in loose fitted robes opening at the chest revealing
his large belly, his plump face turned gently to one side, finely
detailed with a dimpled wide smile and joyfully scrunched
eyes framed by curved wrinkles, all flanked by a pair of long
pendulous ears, his hair neatly combed and incised, the wood
smoothly patinated to a rich reddish-brown tone
