A PAIR OF SMALL CLOISONNÉ VASES WITH PLUM BLOSSOMS
Colored enamel cloisonné. Japan, Meiji period
Both vases have ovoid shapes and everted lips. The floral composition on a deep black-blue
background is rather free and very lively in a decorative way, showing tangled branches of
the plum tree ume but also other blossoms and leaves, including lotus.

A pair of cloisonné vases with
compressed bodies, elegantly high
necks and everted lips. White blossoms
on tangled branches of a plum tree,
or ume. Each vase also shows a
small bird (in different colors) on the
highest branch. Other blossoming
plants around the base. Very fine
composition. With original box.

A pair of cloisonné vases with bulbous bodies, everted lips and short Provenance: From an Austrian private
necks. Each vase shows two white tancho tsuru in flight on a black- collection, formerly collection Doblhof
blue background. These are red-crowned cranes, symbols of luck and
longevity in East Asia. All four cranes are wearing their ‘red crowns’,
or tancho. With wood box. Estimate EUR 1.000,-

A PLIQUE-À-JOUR BOWL
WITH CHRYSANTHEMUMS
Colored plique-à-jour, enamel
and silver. Japan, Meiji period
A rare example of translucent
enamel, called shotai-shippo
in Japan. The metal base
was etched away, leaving
the enamel to appear like
glass. It has a light yellowish
color and shows different
chrysanthemum blossoms
in a very lively composition.
The delicate ring-shaped foot
and lip are silver. The shotai-
shiippo technique came to
Japan via France around 1900.
