                                                                         Porcelain with enamel painting. Japan, Meiji period

                                                                         A globular pot with a tapered neck and flaring
                                                                         rim. Depicted in alternating reserves are golden
                                                                         coiled, three-clawed dragons in red four-clover
                                                                         reserves within a blue border and phoenixes in
                                                                         larger reserves with floral elements. The reserves
                                                                         are surrounded by flowers and scrolling, floral
                                                                         foliage. The imari color palette is achieved here with
                                                                         astonishing harmony and detail; rare in this size and
                                                                         quality. Intended for export, with ‘made in Japan’
                                                                         and signature on the underside.
